Shared Address Space I/O: A Novel I/O Approach for System-on-a-Chip Networking

چکیده
For real-time system -on-a-chip (SoC) network applications, high-speed and lowlatency network I/O is the key to achieve predictable execution and high performance. Existing network I/O approaches are either not directly suited to SoC applications, or too complicated and expensive. This paper introduces a novel approach, referred to as shared address space I/O , for real-time SoC network applications. This approach facilitates build ing of heterogeneous multiprocessor systems with application intensive processors (main processor) and I/O intensive processors (I/O processor), where network I/O processing can be offloaded to a specialized I/O processor. With the shared address space I/O approach, in such a system, communication and synchronization between main and I/O processors can be implemented with a shared address space. This approach is realized through Atalanta, a heterogeneous real-time SoC operating system we have developed. In this paper, we demonstrate that shared address space I/O can provide high-speed and low-latency network I/O for SoC network applications.

متن کاملThe GigaRing Channel
February 1996 27 More powerful processors and an increasing emphasis on networking have created the need for a new supercomputer interconnect. This interconnect must of course provide high bandwidth, but also high reliability, flexibility, and scalability of both cost and performance. Cray Research has developed the GigaRing channel to satisfy these demands. GigaRing is a ring-based channel tha...

Quest-V is a system we have been developing from the ground up, with objectives focusing on safety, predictability and efficiency. It is designed to work on emerging multicore processors with hardware virtualization support. Quest-V is implemented as a “distributed system on a chip” and comprises multiple sandbox kernels. Sandbox kernels are isolated from one another in separate regions of phys...

The present study is to indicate that the comparison between sectoral production multipliers of an input-output (I/O) model and a social accounting matrix (SAM) framework is almost impossible without taking into account accounting balances and theoretical considerations. Theoretically, the I/O model provides the Leontief’s production function, on the basis of which sectoral output multiplier ca...
